Importantly, everything in the show is completely voluntary with an ‘opt in’ policy, not ‘opt out’.
The show usually consists of crude dad jokes, lots of singing and dancing as well as the odd bit of nudity.
It’s our job to make you feel confident and comfortable. We will never ask you to do something that you aren’t comfortable with or morally object to (like nudity, physical contact with another cast member or something you believe is sexist, racist or trauma-inducing).
Uni Revue is very unique in that at the time of casting the show is likely not to be completely written yet. Instead, the director will have a broad conceptual vision of the theme and setting of the show - but the specific scripts, scenes and skits are often written along the way!
The reason for this is that Uni Revue is renowned for being topical and ‘current’ and we mean current. It’s not uncommon for news headlines that unfold ‘today’ to be written into the show script for tonight!
Don’t worry though! It’s designed to be achievable.
The Director is responsible for the overall creative direction of the show. They have the final say on the content and what ultimately makes it to the stage. They will have a roadmap for the main parts of the production - including if there is any overarching story line or theme, ideas for the set and an idea of what roles/ characters they need to cast. These parts of the show are mostly ‘static’.
Then we add into the mix some ‘dynamic’ sections of the show that can change night-to-night. For example, there is a segment where we read satirical news stories to the audience that change each night. However, the news reader is at a news desk and can just read these from the script!
See, totally doable!
That being said, the Uni Revue is particularly dynamic and flexible and cast members will need to approach the show with an open mind and flexible approach. It is a virtual guarantee that scripts, segments and even choreography will change based on changes in cast numbers, current political and/or newsworthy events or even feedback from the audience.
So keep an open mind - go with the flow - and have fun with it!
The production team and audience are not expecting perfection - the important thing is just to keep going and act confident (even if you aren't!).
There is a regular group of writers who submit content to the show's Director. That being said, input from the cast is strongly encouraged! Submit your draft and we can even have some of our experienced writers give you a hand with it.
Importantly, if you do make a submission to the show, you must keep in mind:
there is a formal process to follow
it may not make it to the stage
you may not automatically be cast in your own piece
Scripts may be presented to the cast to workshop at rehearsals and new ideas may come from various discussions and brainstorming.
Cast will have an opportunity to have input and ideas. Scripts will be reviewed by both the Director and in some cases an Ethics Committee before being selected for use in the show.
Using this method the show ‘comes together’ with input from the cast, crew and writers all working together to make something great!
